About The Artist: Ng Li Jie
The work of Singapore-based artist, Ng Li Jie, is contemplative. Having been diagnosed with mild autism at the age of 6, he found a mode of expression through art. Today, he works across a variety of mediums, including oil and acrylic.
Featured Artwork: My Singapore: Melting Pot
This concept of a place where people of different cultures live cohesively together has been masterfully drawn out by Ng Li Jie in his piece, titled My Singapore: Melting Pot.
The patterns in his work are inspired from several of Singapore’s renowned heritage sites; Kampong Glam, Chinatown, Little India, and the Eurasian community house. The gold pearls, symbolising our fragile ties with each other, connect the 4 patterns.
I stood there, ruminating about the delicateness of our social fabric here. Over the past 57 years, Singapore has made tremendous progress in social harmony, yet I fear that we may always be one misunderstanding away from public discord.
In spite of the poignant reminder of the fragility of our peace that we enjoy, the red and yellow strokes around the lid of the clay pot signifies passion and optimism for a better future is a choice. We must continue to establish trust with one another to build on that harmony, as well as to resolve disputes amicably to prevent tears in the seams of our social fabric.
